Description: This project is from our Lethbridge chapter in the Prairies Region. Our client for this unique project is a child who is nonverbal due to a rare and severe disorder called apraxia. The parents reached out to Tetra for any assistance we could provide in helping their child communicate effectively, as commercially available communication devices and boards are prohibitively expensive. The mother knew that her child responded well to visual aids and thought sign language could be an excellent avenue to explore. Our incredible volunteer went out and purchased some basic ASL cards and had them hole-punched and put onto a ring for ease of use by the family. They also purchased an ASL course textbook and held frequent sessions over Zoom to aid the family in learning the language.
